Finding the West (one-day lesson)
Overview
In this lesson, students will question the idea of a geographic space called ‘the West.’ They will first examine a map of the United States, then read two passages that critically discuss the notion of a geographic West.
Learning Goals:
- Students will examine a map of the United States and hypothesize what region constitutes the West.
- Students will begin to think critically about the notion of a geographic American West.
DAY ONE

- Map of the United States
Step 1: 10 minutes: Introduction
a) Show students a big map of the United States. Ask students to jot down as precisely as possible where they believe the West begins.
b) Share student responses.
Step 2: 15 minutes: Read document
Pass out “Where is the West?” and have students read individually and answer questions.
Step 3: 10 minutes: Discussion
As a whole class, discuss student answers to worksheet:
- In what ways does the author echo or differ from students’ responses in Step 1 of the lesson?
Step 4: 15 minutes: Read document
Pass out “Imagining the West” and have student read document and answer questions.
Homework
Students write one paragraph in response to the following question:
Is the West an imagined space or a geographical region? Use the readings from class to support your answer.
EVALUATION CRITERIA:
In order for this homework assignment to meet standards, a student must fulfill the following criteria:
- Demonstrates an understanding of what is meant by an "imagined space."
- Uses evidence from the readings to support a position.
- Writes clearly and persuasively.
