Mapping Railroads (one-day lesson)
Overview
In this lesson, students will learn about commercial mapping and how maps were used to advertise the railroad in both Canada and the United States.
Learning Goals:
- Students will examine learn about the transcontinental railroad in both Canada and the United States and how it was advertised.
- Students will learn about the rise of commercial mapping and Rand McNally.
- Students will begin to think critically about the connection between mapping and commercial expansion.
DAY ONE
Website Materials:
- “Transcontinental Railroad” (from Urban Growth: Bay Area)
- “Canadian Pacific Railway” (from Urban Growth: Calgary)
- “Canadian West”
- “Transcontinental Railroad”
- “Rand McNally”
Step 1: 20 minutes:
Introduction
a) Hand out “Transcontinental Railroad” (from Urban Growth: Bay Area) and “Canadian Pacific Railway” (from Urban Growth: Calgary) and have students answer questions.
b) Discuss as whole class:
- What are some of the similarities and differences between efforts in the United States and Canada to build a transcontinental railroad?
Step 2: 15 minutes: Read document and examine maps
a) Hand out “Canadian West” and “Transcontinental Railroad.”
b) In pairs, have students list similarities and differences between how each country advertised its railroads.
c) Share student answers.
d) Discuss as whole class:
- Why were maps so important in promoting the transcontinental railroads?
Step 3: 15 minutes: Examine maps and pamphlets
Hand out “Rand McNally” and have students answer questions.
Homework
Imagine you are applying for a job with Rand McNally in 1879. They are looking for someone to make a map that depicts the routes and stops of the transcontinental railroad for their new atlas. Write a 1-2 paragraph proposal for the map and pamphlet you intend to design. Be sure to cover the following in your proposal:
- What information will you include on your map and pamphlet?
- Why will people want to buy your map and pamphlet?
- How will your map help the Rand McNally company?
EVALUATION CRITERIA:
In order for students to meet standards on this assignment, their work must fulfill the following criteria:
- Demonstrates an understanding that Rand McNally atlases included information about commerce and business.
- Demonstrates an understanding that the railroads tried to lure both passengers and industries.
- Presents the West as an attractive, safe, lucrative region.
- Writes clearly and persuasively.
