Postdoctoral Fellowships

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Study of the North American West Stanford University

Stanford University’s Bill Lane Center for the Study of the North American West invites applications for its two-year postdoctoral fellowship in the study of the North American West from interested recent Ph.D.s in all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences whose research concerns the Western United States, Western Canada, or Mexico.

In addition to pursuing their own research during each academic year of the appointment, the postdoctoral fellow will teach a course on a Western topic in the Stanford department most appropriate to their academic discipline. The fellow will also take a lead role in planning a conference related to their research.

The Center welcomes fellowship applications from scholars studying the full range of topics related to the past, present, and future of the North American West. We are particularly interested, however, in supporting scholarship that would contribute directly to one of the Center’s current research programs:

Reform of the California Constitution, with a focus on the initiative process

Migration and the Mexican Workforce in the North American West, with emphasis on the effects of human capital deficits, worker remittances, and diaspora networks on economic, social, and political stability in Mexico – and prospects for public and private sector reforms in Mexico and the U.S.

• Technical and Political Challenges to the Use of Reclaimed Wastewater for Irrigation in the West

• The Spatial History Project, see http://www.stanford.edu/group/spatialhistory/

The fellowship is a two-year appointment, beginning September 1st, 2008. Candidates must have their Ph.D. degree in hand by that date, and must have received their Ph.D. no earlier than September 2005. The fellowship carries a stipend of $47,250 and benefits.

Interested candidates may submit applications electronically to Priscilla Williams, Administrative Associate of the Bill Lane Center. Application packages should contain a cover letter, c.v., and a three- to five-page dissertation abstract or book précis. Two letters of reference should be sent by referees to the same email address. If a candidate prefers to submit hard copies of their application and references of their application and references, they should be mailed to the address below.

The deadline for receipt of applications is March 31, 2008. We expect to make a final hiring decision by early May. All materials should be mailed to:
