Center Internships Application Process

Eligibility

Applicants must be currently enrolled Stanford students.  Undergraduates, graduate students and graduating seniors are eligible, provided the student meets the qualifications for the specific internship.  Former interns are not eligible to repeat the same internship, but may apply for a different position.

Summer Internships

Position descriptions for the Center’s summer internships are posted beginning in early January, with an initial application deadline in mid-February.   Additional position descriptions may be added during winter and spring quarters, with application deadlines approximately three weeks after positions are initially posted.

Application materials are reviewed by Center staff as well as by the on-site supervisor for each position.  As part of the application process, students may be contacted by the on-site supervisor for a telephone interview, or possibly invited to an in-person interview locally.

Selection decisions are made jointly by the Center and the organizations which host the interns.  The length of the decision process varies with each position, so the Center does not adhere to a standard notification date.  Decisions are communicated to applicants as quickly as possible.  Applicants wishing to inquire about the status of their application may contact the Center’s Internship Coordinator.

Applying to Multiple Internships

Students may apply for up to three Center internships.  Students applying for multiple positions should submit only one official transcript, resume, and list of references, but should supply a separate personal statement for each position.  Students should also indicate their first, second and third choice placements.

Stanford-in-Government Fellowships

The Bill Lane Center for the Study of the North American West is working collaboratively with Stanford-in-Government (SIG) to advertise SIG fellowships in the American West.  These include government fellowships in Sacramento and in local organizations.  Students should apply for these fellowships directly with SIG.

For questions about the application process, please contact Julie Martinez, Internship Coordinator, at julie.martinez@stanford.edu or 736-9510.
