Media Internship - New America Media

New America Media (NAM) is the country’s first and largest national collaboration of ethnic news organizations.  Founded by the non-profit Pacific News Service in 1996, New America Media is headquartered in San Francisco.  In California, ethnic media are the primary source of news and information for over half of the state’s new ethnic majority, a trend now taking hold in other majority-minority states, such as Texas, New Mexico and Hawaii.  Nationally, one in four adult Americans get their news and information from ethnic media.  New America Media’s goal is to promote the editorial visibility and economic viability of this critical sector of American journalism as a way to build inclusive public discourse in our increasingly diverse, global society

During summer 2007, the intern worked primarily with the social marketing team at New America Media.  This team uses ethnic media outlets throughout California to promote campaigns to inform ethnic communities about social issues or social services available to them.  The intern’s initial responsibility was to become familiar with the array of media outlet partners by updating NAM’s directory of partners.  After becoming familiar with NAM’s partners, the intern assisted with current campaigns by contacting editors and advertising representatives from the partner organizations, to track coverage of advertisements and editorials related to the various campaigns.  Another important aspect of this internship was tracking campaigns and coverage material using computer applications such as Excel, Photoshop and other graphic design programs.

Toward the end of the internship, the intern put together the final report for the Earthquake Preparedness Campaign for 2007.  Preparation of this report provided the intern valuable experience into the elements of a campaign, as well as the best way to present information to clients and to the public.  This report was submitted for two awards with Pacific Gas and Electric.  During the final week of the internship, the intern assisted NAM staff with hosting a group of journalists visiting from rural areas in Peru.  These journalists had just arrived in the U.S. to begin internships in California and Arizona through an exchange program with American journalists.  New America Media organized workshops and site visits, focusing on the importance of efforts to include minority communities in the mainstream media.
