Overview
The Oakland Museum of California is undertaking a multi-year project to re-conceive and rebuild the 25,000-sq ft. Natural Sciences Gallery. Anchored by a major NSF grant, exhibit development and construction is underway.
The new gallery will employ an innovative combination of thematic design, physical space, reconfiguration, and interpretation, while reusing a majority of the existing habitat displays to showcase real places, their environmental challenges, and the communities of people who live there.
New elements will feature collaborative projects with community partners, data visualization of citizen science and environmental stewardship efforts, theatrical immersive experiences, and innovative program areas. Interpretation will be driven by visitors’ questions about the natural world and the visitor’s relationship to it.
Position Description
We are looking for an intern to work closely with staff from the museum and from the Bill Lane Center for the American West to assist with producing dynamic representations of scientific data and processes for a diverse museum audience. The presentations will be primarily targeted for in-gallery installation but may also be developed in web versions.
Possible projects include:
-
Storyboarding and editing short films for installations
-
Using design and media techniques to depict physical earth system phenomena such as volcanism, tectonic shifts, and oceanic upwelling.
-
Visually modeling various climate change scenarios including sea level rise and upward elevation shifts of animal habitats.
-
Our primary goals for an intern at this stage of the project are building and editing multiple draft iterations of one or more of these interactive exhibits. The intern will work with a team of curators, designers, science experts, and education professionals on fabricating these products for the gallery installation.
Qualifications
This internship is open to all currently enrolled Stanford students. We are looking for someone who as an interest and engagement with natural sciences. Experience in any of the following areas: programming, data visualization, video filming or editing, product design, and art, is desirable. The intern should be able to brainstorm and work creatively in a group environment as well as on their own.
Access to a car during the internship is required. Field work may include meeting with researchers and visiting field sites throughout the Bay Area, and possibly farther afield in California.
Compensation
The intern will be paid by the Oakland Museum. All housing and transportation arrangements will be the responsibility of the intern.

[value] => The Oakland Museum of California is undertaking a multi-year project to re-conceive and rebuild the 25,000-sq ft.

[value] => We are looking for an intern to work closely with staff from the museum and from the Bill Lane Center for the American West to assist with producing dynamic representations of scientific data and processes for a diverse museum audience.

Organization:
The Oakland Museum of California
Start/End Dates:
June 18, 2012 - August 24, 2012
Eligibility:
All currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students
Summary:

Media and data visualization internship with the Oakland Museum of California assisting in the re-conceiving and rebuilding the Natural Sciences Gallery.

Organizational Overview:

Position Description:

We are looking for an intern to work closely with staff from the museum and from the Bill Lane Center for the American West to assist with producing dynamic representations of scientific data and processes for a diverse museum audience. The presentations will be primarily targeted for in-gallery installation but may also be developed in web versions.

Possible projects include:

Storyboarding and editing short films for installations

Using design and media techniques to depict physical earth system phenomena such as volcanism, tectonic shifts, and oceanic upwelling.

Visually modeling various climate change scenarios including sea level rise and upward elevation shifts of animal habitats.

Our primary goals for an intern at this stage of the project are building and editing multiple draft iterations of one or more of these interactive exhibits. The intern will work with a team of curators, designers, science experts, and education professionals on fabricating these products for the gallery installation.
