Programs
Scholars
The Center offers a wide range of research, teaching, and collaborative opportunities for Stanford faculty, researchers and faculty from other institutions, and independent scholars. They include:
Writers and Journalists
Professional journalists and writers of fiction and non-fiction are important chroniclers of the West’s politics, economics, and society, and the Center supports their work through a number of programs:
Undergraduate Students
Whether native Westerners or just interested in finding out more about the region where they are spending four years, the Center is the place where all Stanford undergraduates can learn about the past, present, and future of the region. We offer:
Graduate Students
The coursework, research programs, and professional development opportunities offered by The Bill Lane Center for the Study of the North American West create a vibrant interdisciplinary community for Stanford graduate students interested in Western topics.
High School Teachers and Students
By winter 2007, teachers and their students will be able to learn more about the past, present, and future of the North American West by exploring the electronic teaching resource, “What is the West.” The project, funded and developed by the Center, includes teaching units exploring the urbanization of the West, the region’s natural environment, and the mapping of the West. While the site is under construction, teachers and students can explore other parts of this web site, including pages with material from our conferences on urban land use, direct democracy, Western journalism, and forestry, and resource listings of other organizations exploring the policy and culture of the West.
The Public
Center programs engage and inform the community beyond campus through a range of public events, including:
