The Center is a hub for scholarship, teaching, and conversation about the West — past, present, and future. We are a collaboration of full time staff, Stanford faculty, visiting scholars, postdoctoral researchers, and students.
The vision and research agenda for the Center is directed by a Stanford faculty member. Since 2012, Political Scientist Bruce Cain has served as the Center's Spence and Cleone Eccles Family Director.
A small core administrative staff supports the Center's daily work to advance undergraduate education, academic research, and journalism of the American West.
Members of our Advisory Council are united by shared commitments to Stanford, the West, research, and undergraduate education.
Our researchers come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. The focus of their work is rich and varied.
Hailing from Stanford and other academic institutions, visiting fellows at the Center bring with them a wealth of experience on a range of western issues.
The Bill Lane Center has been an interdisciplinary enterprise since its inception. Our project collaborators include a number of research centers on campus.
