Join us for an unforgettable afternoon as we explore the Consuelo Kanaga: Catch the Spirit and Around Group f.64: Legacies and Counterhistories in Bay Area Photography exhibitions, engage with art experts, and immerse ourselves in the rich history of photography—from social justice to modernist innovation. As part of the Bill Lane Center’s ArtsWest program, we’re excited to offer our patrons an exclusive, guided tour of these two landmark photography exhibitions at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)and a post-tour dinner reception at Fang's Restaurant.
About the Exhibitions:
Consuelo Kanaga: Catch the Spirit
This groundbreaking exhibition honors Consuelo Kanaga, a pioneering woman in American photojournalism. Between the 1910s and 1970s, Kanaga’s evocative photography captured social justice issues ranging from racial terror to labor rights. A bicoastal artist working in both New York and San Francisco, Kanaga’s legacy as one of the first women staff photographers at The San Francisco Chronicle has made her a trailblazer in modern photography.
Organized in collaboration with the Brooklyn Museum and Fundación Mapfre, the exhibition is curated by Drew Sawyer, Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Shana Lopes, Assistant Curator of Photography at SFMOMA.
Major support for this exhibition is provided by the Pritzker Exhibition Fund in Photography, with significant backing from The Black Dog Private Foundation.
Around Group f.64: Legacies and Counterhistories in Bay Area Photography
Formed in 1932, Group f.64 was a short-lived but immensely influential collective of photographers who rejected Pictorialism, embracing "true" photography. With luminaries such as Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Edward Weston, Group f.64 sought to create images of unparalleled clarity and beauty, forever changing the trajectory of modernist photography.
This exhibition explores the legacy of Group f.64 and the broader history of Bay Area photography from the 1910s to the present. It highlights the groundbreaking works of these iconic figures and examines how their revolutionary approach continues to influence contemporary photography today.
