Our online magazine, & the West, presents journalism on the environment, the rural West and Native nations

The lands, water and people of the West are the focus of  & the West, the online magazine published by the Bill Lane Center for the American West. Fire, drought and a changing climate frame most questions we examine. We care about the things and people that have made the West what it is, and how they are changing the West’s natural and human landscapes.

Our publication seeks to look over the horizon at the stories of tomorrow – from the threat sea-level rise poses to coastal communities to the uneven distribution of essential technologies like broadband internet or electric vehicle chargers. Water is central to our work, from the rivers of the Northwest and the dams that transformed them and strangled their salmon runs, to the fading Colorado River, to the groundwater underneath California’s Central Valley, which is now subject to new controls.

In these pages you will find us tracing decisions facing Native Nations and descriptions of the delicate bonds of trust that hold rural regions together. Conversations with leading academics and policy makers illuminate the topics we cover. Original infographics, maps and data visualizations -- like our map showing crops on every acre of California farmland -- make the reality of the West's landscape and infrastructure tangible. Every two weeks we offer a sample of the best in environmental journalism about the West.

You can keep up with our stories through our email newsletter or follow us on twitter at @westcenter
