Surabhi Balachander

Surabhi Balachander was a program coordinator at the Bill Lane Center for the American West for six years. From 2017-18, Surabhi worked full-time to manage and assist with programs such as internships, Sophomore College, and ArtsWest. In 2019 she returned part-time to work with the Center's Rural West Initiative and other programs as needed. After completing a PhD in English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan in 2024, Surabhi moved on to Oregon State University to become an assistant professor of English. At Michigan, Surabhi taught courses on rural America and the environment, and Asian American literature. Her research focused on rurality, race and ethnicity, and environment in American literature from 1920 to the present. At Oregon State, Surabhi will continue pursuing her interests in multiethnic American literature within rural contexts.
